the remnant chronicles, a review

I had been searching for a new YA fantasy series to replace my love of anything by Cassandra Clare while I wait for her next book to come out. The Remnant Chronicles by Mary E. Pearson have been on my list for a few years now, and the cover art of the first book in the series, A Kiss of Deception, occasionally popped into my head when deciding on which book to read next. But it wasn’t until two friends mentioned the series again in 2020 that I actually made the decision to read it.

And boy, I’m glad I did.

This series had me hooked from the first chapter. Princess Lia is First Daughter, is ‘supposed to’ have a magical vision called The Sight and is betrothed to a Prince she has never met. Sick of expectations and the sham of a wedding she has no interest in, she decides to flee.

The morning of her wedding, Princess Lia escapes on horseback with her best friend Pauline to a faraway community where Pauline’s aunt lives and owns a tavern. Lia does everything in her power to make herself anonymous as she learns to become a tavern maid, but almost immediately captures the attention of two young men, also new to town. These men are posed as ordinary gentlemen, but both hold a mysterious air to them. As a reader, we get to read from their perspectives too; and we learn one is a Prince, the other an Assassin. They are both there for Princess Lia and aren’t fooled by her efforts to become anonymous.

The Kiss of Deception twists and turns, using a rare literary device mid-way through the book that left me floored! If you haven’t read this novel yet, I won’t say anything more. The second book in the series, The Heart of Betrayal, takes place in an entirely different part of the fantastical world that author Mary E. Pearson skillfully paints, and it kept me on my toes while intensely creeping me out at times too. The third book, The Beauty of Darkness, was a fast-paced, thrilling ride and I think I finished it in three days! I actually listened to the whole series on Audible (you guys all know that’s my go-to these days- busy mama life!) and was very impressed by the voice actors. (If you do listen to this series on Audible, I suggest upping the speed, otherwise each book is about 19 hours long!)

This was the series I had been waiting for. I hope you like it as much as I do! Shoot me a note with your thoughts. ❤
