You don’t need to be a big box retailer to make an impact on the baby fashion market anymore, and Canadian entrepreneurs Little Navy, Surfing Ninjas, Buck & Doe and Blue Neptune know this first hand. I recently worked with these four hardworking, ‘Insta-Famous’ mamas, along with my Producer friend Kieran at The Morning Show on Global TV, to create a national segment celebrating Canadian-made baby fashion.
The segment aired nationally on Friday, June 23, 2017 and can be seen on the top Canadian News site here. If you want to know more about each brand and each baby’s clothes, please read the below and be sure to check out each designer’s online shop. The clothes are well-made, stylish, and most importantly: made with love.
Baby Xavier, 18 months:
My playful son wore an outfit that complimented his extroverted personality perfectly: a checkered, sleeveless all-season jumper by Blue Neptune. All Blue Neptune’s prints are designed in-house and are exclusive and unique to the brand, so you know your baby is always going to look stylin’. I can’t wait to order another jumper from Blue Neptune- Xavier was super comfortable and active in his; he’s a little climber and always on the go, so stretchiness and breathable material are important!
Xavier also donned a customized ‘Xavier’ slouchie beanie, which was made with stretchy cotton jersey. The adorable beanie was made by Little Navy, comes in every size, from 0-3 months to 6T, and is such a great gift idea for baby showers and loved ones!
You’ll see in the segment that Xavier had two accessories with him as well. One was a unique wall hanging, made by Surfing Ninjas. The surfing ninja “Kido” logo is the main focus of this piece, and has been laser cut out of 5mm Baltic Birch plywood. It can be left raw, stained, or custom painted to any color! My hubby and I are excited to hang it in Xavier’s new bedroom.
Xavi also loves to cuddle with blankets when he’s sleepy after a long day, and to run around with one in his meaty little hands like a matador when he’s hyper! So, the super soft, full meter square receiving blanket made by Buck and Doe was the perfect accessory to cap off Xavier’s look and feel in the segment.
Baby Cristiano, 19 months:
My dear friend Sabrina loved the outfit that her little guy modeled, and funny enough, the stylish pieces also suited his cool, little drummer personality. On his bottom half, Cristiano wore an adorable pair of Cristiano-personalized harem pants with sharks, made by Little Navy. These comfy, modern, unisex pants were made with love with a super soft cotton jersey, which is preshrunk for maximum comfort and perfect for lots of playing. They come customizable in a variety of designs and colors, with a drop crotch and slim cuffed legs.
To keep cozy on the rainy morning we were experiencing, Cristiano wore a Blue Neptune ice blue hoodie, made of warm fleece lined fabric. And lucky for him, it’s also available as a full tracksuit with harem pants, with more colors coming this Fall. Cristiano loves to cuddle and his new sweatshirt made him look extra cuddly!
My hubby commented on Cristiano’s super-hip tee, made by Surfing Ninjas… I think he wanted one in his own size! The very popular ninja surf van design has been printed in 3 colors on the softest tri-blend tee around, and the design is a shout-out to the chill surfer vibes of the Surfing Ninja brand, while still holding true to their ninja spirit!
Cristiano’s stylin’ black and white outfit was capped off with one of Buck and Doe’s most useful items- the pacifier clip! I know my own little guy, Xavier, has a bunch of Buck and Doe’s soother clips, and we never leave home on a long car ride without one! I love that you can match your baby’s outfit to their soother clips, and that its clips are lead and nickel free. They also are available as a snap or ribbon end for use with a variety of soothers.
Baby Anastasia, 10 months:
Little Greek Goddess Anastasia and her mama Zoi just adored Baby A’s watermelon- themed outfit and accessories. She wore the cutest pair of organic cotton knit watercolor watermelon shorties, made by Buck and Doe. These shorts show off cute baby thighs, and leave lots of room for diapers. They also are available for boys in a slightly longer style and are available in sizes 0-6, right up to 6T.
To match the shorties, Little Navy supplied Baby A with the softest personalized blanket I have ever felt! Known as Little Navy’s ‘Minky’ blanket, it’s their top selling blanket, made from the softest minky fabric, and was customized with Baby A’s name and a beautiful pink and black watermelon print. Available in four sizes (Anastasia’s featured blanket is in the ‘Snuggle’ size – which is perfect for tummy time, the stroller, car seat and cuddles), each blanket is designed and handmade for every special baby out there! (I want one for myself: but that’s neither here nor there).
Onesies, tee’s and tanks are the best way to stay cool this summer, so Baby A looked mighty fly and comfy in her Surfing Ninja’s Tiny Ninja black short sleeve onesie. Sticking to the origins of the brand, Baby A’s onesie design is screen printed on a 100% cotton short sleeve onesie. As the Surfing Ninja’s ‘mompreneur’ Shay says, it’s a fitting “design to explain motherhood, since all mamas can attest that they too have a tiny ninja on their hands!”
Lastly, Baby A sported Blue Neptune’s Teal Hoodie With Ears, made of warm fleece lined fabric with cute ears on the hood, also available as a full tracksuit with more color options coming this Fall. The ears were super cute in the navy strips, and completed her outfit beautifully!
Baby Stella, 22 months:
At 22 months, Stella’s mama Jean can attest to that fact that Stella needs clothes she can run around and play in. That’s why Surfing Ninja’s “Kido” Skater Dress was perfect for Stelli to run around in before and after her national TV debut! Using the signature surfing ninja “Kido”, this dress design was printed all over on 95% cotton with 5% spandex for that busy little ninja, and proved to be comfy, cozy & durable, while still looking super cool!
The dress was artfully paired with one of my favorite pieces from Buck and Doe, their signature plaid bandanna bib. (The number of bandanna bibs I have ordered from Buck and Doe for Xavier is unheard of! He was so drooly as a little one!) The extra soft bandanna bib has a minky back, for extra absorbency. It features quality snaps on the back, and washes well so you don’t need to worry about spills. It comes in a variety of prints and neutral colors for every baby, and standard size fits from newborn to toddler.
Stella carried in the personalized Lovie Blanket, black with plaid hearts, made by Little Navy. It tied the outfit together so nicely! Made with an ultra soft minky fabric that is custom printed on both sides, it is the perfect little security blanket for tiny hands and great for on-the-go too!
Lastly, Stella wore the Blue Neptune White Mesh Hoodie overtop of her dress, which is on pre-order sale right now. The mesh hoodie is brilliant for hot summer days or over top of a bathing suit, and there are more color options available. This hoodie is a GREAT idea for the summer heat!
After having met and worked with all of these amazing women on the Morning Show segment, I’m so happy to show my support of them, and share with you a little bit about each company. I hope you find their styles as inspired as I do. Below is a small snippet on each company in alphabetical order, provided to me by them. You’ll find hyperlinks to their websites, as well as hyperlinks to their Instagram feeds in each description below.
Blue Neptune makes comfortable, fun and modern apparel using unique signature prints which are designed and hand drawn in-house by owner/designer/mompreneur Renée MacLeod before being printed onto fabric. Each item is sewn by hand right in the heart of downtown Toronto. Sizes 0 to 3t.
Buck & Doe is a handmade company by Brittney Hendricks and Meaghan Doram, out of Alberta. Born from the idea that store-bought receiving blankets were way too small, B&D has continued to grow and has branched out to leggings, and shorts. They make receiving blankets, car seat blankets, car seat covers, swaddle blankets, bibs, soother clips, leggings and shorts.
Brittney is a full-time Mom of two girls, Hudson and Sloan, and Meaghan is a full-time teacher, and Mom of Declan, with a little one on the way. B&D is mostly custom orders for bigger items; contact via Facebook or the website to book a custom item.
Little Navy is owned and operated by mompreneur, Jennifer. She runs her business out of her home while taking care of her two young children, both under the age of 4. She designs and hand makes adorable custom blankets, bedding and apparel for kids and baby. All items are available for purchase online: www.littlenavy.com
Surfing Ninjas is imagined & designed by local mama, Shay Benedict & made right here in Toronto, Canada. She started this little venture at home while on maternity leave; inspired by watching the fearless adventures of her two little ninjas, Xavier & Remy. Her goal is to create cozy, comfy & super cool threads for the busiest of ninjas!
While it started out with tees & onesies, the line has grown to toques, dresses, rompers, shorts & even some fun décor! With a strong love of monochrome goodness, this rad gear is super trendy, unique & ninja approved!
Don’t forget to follow each brand on Instagram to see what their newest prints and products are for each season!
